17 riders will take on the 2011 Bupa Around the Bay this Sunday as team isft.  As per last year, the polka-dotted kit will be out in force but for 2011, in an all-black design.   The team will make the 135km trek from Sorrento to Melbourne to raise funds exclusively for research at the Victorian Melanoma Service.  This year isft. have also partnered up with SunSmart to provide all participants with some tips for keeping their skin in-check over the day:

With the Australian ski season coming to a close and summer creeping up, isft. are proud to finally announce that in addition to equipment supplied to the Victorian Melanoma Service (VMS), we now officially support melanoma research at the unit.

Currently, surgery remains the gold-standard in the management of primary melanoma.  New research is being undertaken by the VMS and the general surgical team at the Alfred Hospital to evaluate the appropriate amount of tissue necessary for excision around a melanoma to decrease the chance of disease recurrence.

Professor John Kelly, head of the VMS said, “These studies are aimed at at minimizing the extent of surgery required to clear a tumour… this will help those involved in melanoma treatment worldwide to better understand the role of a procedure that we undertake on every melanoma.  It may also tell us  how much skin should ideally be removed and which melanomas are likely to extend invisibly into surrounding tissue.”
